The Dominican Republic shares the Island of Hispaniola with the Republic of Haiti. Covering an area of 48,400 km2, it is the second largest country in the Caribbean. Thanks to its climate and seemingly endless miles of beach, the Dominican Republic has become a top quality tourist destination connected with the world's leading cities.

It has an estimated population of 7,600,000 inhabitants, a mixture of different, mainly urban influences, with around 2,000,000 inhabitants living in the capital, Santo Domingo. The landscape is varied and includes Lake Enriquillo, which, at 144 metres below sea level, is the lowest point in the Caribbean, and Pico Duarte, the highest in the Caribbean, with an altitude of 3,175 metres. The Cibao Valley is the main agricultural area.

LANGUAGE: The official language of the Dominican Republic is Spanish. In the main tourist resorts, it is common to find people who talk English, French, Italian and German.
CLIMATE: The climate in the coastal area is mainly warm, as is typical in the tropics. The temperatures are cooler in the middle of the country. The average temperature all year long is 25ºC, or 77ºF.

CURRENCY: The unit of currency in the Dominican Republic is the Dominican peso, with an official exchange rate of: DR$15.35 per US dollar; DR$2.38 per French Franc; and DR$17.00 per Euro.

SHOPPING: Haggling is accepted in markets and small shops, but not in department stores, where prices are fixed. The most interesting items are handicrafts, pottery, typical naive paintings, coffee, tobacco and rum.
International credit cards (Visa, MasterCard and American Express) are accepted in most of the country's shopping centres and restaurants.

ELECTRICITY SUPPLY: The power supply in homes and hotels is 110/220 volts and 60 Hz.

TIPPING AND TAXES: In the Dominican Republic, 10% is included in the bill's total for service, although it is common practice to leave tips at restaurants, hotels (especially for room service) airports, etc. Most commercial establishments include the legally required 8% tax in the price of their goods. However, hotels and other establishments include this percentage at the bottom of the bill.

SHOP OPENING TIMES: The vast majority of commercial establishments are open non-stop between 9.00am and 7.00pm from Monday to Saturday. Commercial banks are open between 8.00am and 4.00pm from Monday to Friday. At night and on public holidays, automated banking services are available in almost all the country's commercial establishments

Gran Bahia Principe Resorts Bávaro

We stayed at the Bahia Principe at the end of November for a week and it was decent for the money we spent. We usually go to Sandals resorts in Jamaica but found a great deal through Selloffvactions and thought we would try something different. We knew it wouldn't be as good but we also spent a lot less.

The rooms and grounds are kept up nicely for a huge resort. There is nothing special about the rooms and the beds do not have box springs so they were a little uncomfortable, but the rooms were clean and we always had a stocked cooler. The resort is almost too big and spread out very far. We usually like to get to the gym 2-3 times during the week when we are away, but it was soo far on the other side of the resort we never felt like going. Although, we did walk so much that it was like working out anyway. I thought the gym, minature golf, and other activities could have been more centrally located.

The food was ok at best. We did like the Mexican and Mediteranean restaurants. The buffett was ok. They had some sort of chocolate syrup for the french toast and pancakes but no maple syrup. I love chocolate but not that way. The burger stand was decent for lunch.

The drinks - BAD!! They water everything down including the orange juice at the breakfast buffett. I could have drank mixed drinks for 24 hours straight and not even got a buzz. You might find and occasional bartender who makes a decent drink but I have never seen such blatent watered down drinks. You may want to buy some bottles and have a few drinks before you go out at night, although I guess that kind of goes against the all-inclusive idea.

The main pool was very nice and that is where we spent most of the daytime. The beach was not anything special. We didn't really experience any of the sand flea problems other people seem to have had because we were around the pool more.

We did the Jeep Safari tour through Campo tours at the end of the resort. The resort will tell you not to use them, but they do a great job and are a decent amount cheaper. The place looks a little shady when you go down to talk to them, but after reading other posts on here, I knew we could trust them. I hightly recommend doing the Jeep Safari Tour. It's a great way to see the country and how they live. It is a full day tour and it was the only time I got buzzed all week because they give you rum and coke through the whole tour that is not watered down. Bring some pens, pencils, candy, etc to throw to the kids.

The entertainment at night got a little old after the third day there. They did dance routines just about every night. At 11 PM, the entertainment moves to the street and to the bars on the street. They seemed to mix up the entertainment a little more there each night.

Any vacation is only as good as you make it and overall we had a good time. The weather was great all week, and we met some great people from the UK that we spent a lot of time with during the week and a lot of nice people from Canada. The majority of people at the resort seemed to be from Canada, the UK, and Germany. We actually didn't meet another person from the US all week. We had a good time but we definitely would not rush back to this resort.

It was great!!! At first when i read everyone's reviews before we left i thought it was going to be soso, but when we got there we had a lot of fun. I went with my family for 1 week, and it was unforgetable the rooms were average, & pretty clean. We met many people on the trip especially playing volleyball, and the pool games. The staff was very friendly, and the resort is huge!!!The food although was ok not great (but try the mexican restaurant). There are little trians (long golf carts) that take you everywhere if you need, and there is a street right outside the entrance (for the guests)to shop, drink, and have fun. There is a casino , many bars, a club, restaurants, and little shops.

Here are some tips though:

~bring lots of single dollars (american dollars) for tips
~ bring bug spray, and sun screen
~ bring towels just in case, becasue there is a high demand at the pool
~ don't buy any excurions off of people on the beach, but them directly through the office
